The recent release of Android 13 saw relatively quick adoption from flagship devices of several top manufacturers. However, the spread of the latest Android version to mid-range and budget segment devices is expected to take longer. As Google works on the next generation Android 14 update, the question arises - which smartphone brands will ensure timely upgrades for their entire product portfolio?

Race to Android 14 - Which Manufacturers Will Upgrade Devices to the Latest Version

Samsung has had a strong track record so far, providing continued software support for 4 generations of Android OS updates for their premium Galaxy devices. Software release timeframes for lower priced A, M and F series models are less defined. With Android 14, customers will expect to see how many budget category devices are included in Samsung's upgrade cycle.

Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has promised 3 major Android version updates for some models but been inconsistent in delivering these. For Android 14, Xiaomi will need to match their claims with performance, especially on their sub 15k Redmi phones still running old versions of Android. Realme, Oppo and Vivo have similar issues with extensive model lineups and variances in software support by price segment.

Google Pixel devices lead the charts in receiving the fastest and most extensive Android OS and security updates from the company. The affordable Pixel 6a for instance comes with guaranteed updates until August 2025. Its impressive software support is a key factor attracting buyers despite some hardware tradeoffs.

As Indian smartphone consumers get more aware of the longevity of software upgrades, manufacturers will focus on highlighting Android version update roadmaps to differentiate. Those able to demonstrate commitment beyond only premium devices will build greater customer loyalty in the competitive, cost-sensitive Indian market.
